What is PTSD?
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a serious mental health condition that can develop after being exposed to adverse childhood hood experiences (physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, loneliness, etc.) and/or traumatic events (accident, assault, disaster, combat, etc.). PTSD is not just about feeling stressed or anxious after trauma—it is a complex disorder that can significantly disrupt daily life, relationships, and overall well-being.
Core Symptoms of PTSD
PTSD symptoms are generally grouped into four main categories:
- Intrusive Memories: Recurrent, unwanted distressing memories, nightmares, or flashbacks of the traumatic event.
- Avoidance: Efforts to avoid thinking about, talking about, or being reminded of the trauma. This can include avoiding places, people, or activities that trigger memories.
- Negative Changes in Thinking and Mood: This may include emotional numbness, feelings of detachment, persistent negative emotions, distorted beliefs about oneself or others, and loss of interest in activities.
- Changes in Physical and Emotional Reactions: Being easily startled, feeling tense or “on edge,” difficulty sleeping, irritability, angry outbursts, or self-destructive behavior
